The thirteenth stage on the trade-route, noj miles from Dalbandin
and 225^ miles from Nushki. Here there is a levy post and two-roomed
travellers’ serai. There are three wells close to a small ziarat consisting
of one dead tree with a few rags and gewgaws hung on it, erected to
Pir Sultan ; water 9 feet from surface, 1 foot deep, 3 feet diameter. The
water is very abundant but slightly brackish and purgative. This means
that water has to be carried from Isatahir to Amir Chah, 60 miles. The
wells on being emptied fill up again in fifteen minutes. But see Nok
Kundi.
Unlimited, open.
Supplies. —Nil.
Fodder.—Gxzss> nil.
Camel-grazing.—Good and abundant lana.
Fuel. —Scarce ; some small tamarisk trees in a nala 1 mile to the
north.
There were a few pieces of sulphur lying about in a sufficiently pure
state to burn readily when lighted with a match. (Roome.)
KONDI CHAH.—Lat. 28° 28' 40" ; Long. 62° 48' 40" ; Elev.
A spring or well, situated amongst the northern defiles of the Koh-i-
Sultan. P. C. bearing from Nildik 180° and 8 miles distant. A track
from Nildik leads to it and showed signs of being used by many head of
sheep and goats ; is narrow and rough ; would not be passable by wheels.
The water is not good, nor is it sweet, and there is no fuel or grass.
Many families that come to the Koh-i-Sultan to collect assafcetida
live near. No supplies, but sheep and goats could be obtained there

About 2 miles south-south-west of Gazechah on the road to Cha*
gai.

The south-east portion of Dalbandin plain.
KUCHAKI CHAH.—Lat. 29 0 5'; Long. 65° 33'; Elev.
The third stage on the trade-route, 47! miles from Nushki. There is
here a levy post with accommodation for caravans and space inside the
post to park about 10 camels. It is situated at the foot of the Kharan
hills which rise in their rocky barrenness to the south, while to the
north the plain is broken by rocky heaps which rise in fantastic shapes
from the black gravel soil. Good water is obtained in abundance from
wells, one of which is fitted wdth windlass and watering trough. The

KUCHAL.—Lat. 29 0 12'; Long. 65° 45' ; Elev.
A well on the northern slopes of Koh-i-Sheikh Hussein lying about 1
mile to the east of Chah Shakkar. The water in it is good and 30 feet
from the surface, capacity 150 gallons, refilling in an hour. (Roome.)

Content

A report, marked as secret, on the area of Nushki, Chagai, and Western Sinjarani. The report was compiled in the Intelligence Branch, Quarter Master General's Department. The report was commenced in 1897 by Captain R E Roome, 6th Bombay Cavalry (Jacob's Horse), and revised and completed by Major W C Walton, 104th Wellesley's Rifles, Deputy Assistant Quarter Master General in 1903. It was printed at the Government Central Printing Office, Simla, in 1904.

The report includes a preface by Colonel John E Nixon, Assistant Quarter Master General, Intelligence Branch (folio 5) and a glossary of vernacular terms used (folio 6). The main body of the report contains chapters on geography, communications, fortified posts and forts, climate, sanitation, resources, ethnography, history, administration, and military strength.

The second part of the report includes a gazetteer of topographical and ethnographic information (folios 36-127) and appendices covering wells, canals, and meteorology, and including a report on the signalling stations of the Dalbandin-Robat line, with sketches (folios 131-147).

The volume includes the following maps:
