LANDI—
The second stage on the road from Nushki to the Helmand by Shah
Ismail. It is 22 miles distant from Nushki and 28 from Zaru. This name
belongs to some cultivation on the right bank of the Lora river. The only
water-supply is from the river-bed and this sometimes fails. When this
is the case, the people of the country say that they sometimes go to Zangi
Nawar or Jabar tank on the Chagai road, and thence strike north-west
across the desert for Zahro or Kani. The distance is considerable, 30 to 35
miles, and kajilas halt without water at a spot called Sangur, about half
way to Zahro. The crossing of the Lora at Landi and other places is easy
when the channel is dry, but difficult on account of the soft muddy bottom
when the river is running.
This place apparently has now (1887) been superseded as a halting-
ground by Band, which lies about 8 miles to the north-west. {Maitland^

LANDI MUHAMMAD AMIN—Elev. 1,962'.
This place shown on the map as Landi is now known as Landi
Muhammad Amin and the district across the river is called Khan Nashin.
The Helmand at this point turns north-east, the actual bend being about
half a mile above the village. The actual bed of the river is about
1 mile wide ; there are several branches of the stream, in only two of
which there was water; there are also several islands. In the main
channel the water was about 100 yards wide, about 6 feet deep and the
surface velocity about 2^ miles an hour. Near the bend, practically at
it, there was a ford about 3 feet deep, 200 yards long, with a bottom of
shingle. When the river is in flood, i.e., in the months of March, April
and May, the river is crossed by means of inflated masaks. The Helmand
changes its course at Landi Muhammad Amin, turning west. The
regular banks are about a mile apart, the deep water channel at the
bend lying under the left of the southern bank. The bed is composed of
shingle ; just below the bend there is a bar or rapid which extends in a
V-shape across the main stream. The apex of the V points down stream
and the depth of. water on the bar is about 3 feet. Nearly all the fords
on the river are situated at those points where such rapids or bars exist.
The banks of the Helmand must not be confounded with the cliffs that
line the strip of alluvial soil in which it flow's. This portion of the
