40 yards wide, the whole 8 feet to 9 feet deep. Water is good, and is a
collection of rain and drainage water.
Water is easily accessible for horses and camels. If rain falls in July,
this pond does not dry up all the year round ; but in the absence of July
rain it dries about September, until refilled by winter rain. There is a
temporary settlement of about one hundred and fifty Brahui families, and
four or five families of permanent inhabitants, who cultivate a few 7 acres
of cereal crops.
The length of the Lora, from the confluence of the streams to the
Hamun, is about 220 miles. If the Surkhab be added, the total length
of the river amounts to about 270 miles. Its fall appears to be about 20
feet a mile in the plains, and 25 feet a mile in the Middle Lora
defiles.
The water of the Lora, in contrast with that of the generality of
streams in Khurasan, is invariably muddy. Even when quite low it is far
from clear. It deposits considerable quantities of red clay and salts. The
former is brought dowm in such quantity that after any flood all the stones
covered by the water for a few hours are found when dry to have a
coating of clay as thick as writing paper. This is of a bright red colour,
and contrasts sharply with the white salt left wherever there has been
evaporation. The clay comes from the banks of the Toghai near the
furthest sources of the river. The water of the Lora is sligthly saline
to the taste, but quite drinkable, and not unwholesome for a^ few days.
The river contains very few fish, and those of small size. Numbers of
them are affected with a species of tapew T orm, {Maitland.')
LUKMAN NAWAR—
A depression in the sandy tract, west of Nushki, a few miles north
west of Band. An old camel track from Land! to this place crosses the
Nushki-Gazachah route, about 3 miles west of Band. {Maitland.)
LUND I BARECHI OR LANDI BARECHI—
A village on the left bank cf the Helmand, about 18 miles below
Khwaja Ali, w T ith a population of some 7°® Barechis. It is irrigated
by two canals and has about 45 ® acres of wheat and barley under culti
vation. The valley is here very harrow, and the cultivable area very
restricted. The village is the head-quarters of a colony of Barech Afghans
from Shorawak, who have been settled here for a cons^erable number
of years. The village possesses some 80 cattle and 270 sheep and goats.
