SHAHI-CHAH—
A filing-place on the road from the Mashkel to Sehkoha in Seistau
It is six stages (87 miles) from Camp Mashkel, and three stages (ji
miles) to Ladis. Water from a well. [Bell.) &
SHAHID DAND.—Lat. 29° 37'; Long. 65° 36'; Kiev.
East of and close to Zendin Navvar west of the road from Umar Shah
to Papring and about 8 miles north east of the former.
SHAHIDI RIVER—
A tributary of the Piran river (7. v.).
SH AH-I-D 1 WANA WELL.—Lat. 29 0 28' 25"; Long. 65° 50' o" ; Elev.
About 8 miles slightly north of west from Baghak in the Nushki dis
trict. T here are four wells of brackish water 33 feet deep with 7 feet of
water,
SHAH-l-MARDAN—

SHAH ISMAIL—Elev. 3,871/
A halting-place on the Nushki-Helmand route via Gazachah andSafla.
This route, which is termed the Shah Ismail route, lies north of the Lora
Hamun, while the alternative route via Chagai lies south of the same,
I he former w 7 as the road taken by the'Afghan Boundary Commission in
1884 and 1885. The halting-place is the 10th stage (111 miles) from
Nushki and 542 miles or four stages from Galachah (7 v.). i here is here
nothing more than a ziarat wuth a few scattered brushwood huts of fakirs.
Just beyond this are three wells, or rather holes, in the bed of a water
course, so shallow as to be at first sight hardly perceptible. Near by
are two melon patches. The water is very near the surface and appears
to run a little beneath the stones. I here are also other wells in the
vicinity, and once there was a chashma or spring, but it has been com
pletely closed the last few years by a sand drift, and the site almost
obliterated.

There is, in addition, water in fifty-three shallow' pools wdiich, after
making a deduction of one-third on account of difficulty in utilising the
last few inches in each pool, would give loo gallons more : total at Shah
Ismail 3,186 gallons. The wells all refill very rapidly, at least twice if
not thrice in 24 hours. The subsoil is a coarse hard gravel. With
proper tools much deeper w'ells could be sunk. The natural supply of
water appears large and lies 2 to 3 feet below the surface.
There is a quadrangular mound east of the wells, which was once a fort,
and from it a good view of the surrounding country can be obtained.
