No. 55.
Vice-Consul Boyadjian to Acting Consul Hampson .— {Received at the Foreign Office,
July 10.)
Sir, Diarbekir, June 8, 1891.
I HAVE the honour to inform you that the Tayan Kurds, one of the nomad
tribes of the Djezire district, have, in consequence of an old dispute between their two
Chiefs, fallen lately upon each other, and in a bloody affray about twenty of their
number were killed and thirty or forty wounded.
The Arabs are again giving a good deal of trouble to the inhabitants of the districts
of the Mardin Sandjak bordering on the desert, and causing anxiety to the Local
Government. Taking advantage of the absence of the soldiers, generally stationed in
those localities at the spring season for projecting the country against incursions, the
Shammar Arabs have come in large numbers, are feeding their herds, and, to the great
annoyance of the people, damaging the cultivation, and thus doing much mischief.
The Governor-General, his Excellency Hadji Hassan Bey, who is in Djezire now,
applied for one or two detachments of cavalry soldiers, but the Commander-in-chief of
4th Corps d’Armee declined to accede to this request, stating that he could not send them
without previously receiving the command of His Imperial Majesty the Sultan. And
I have been just informed that the necessary orders have been given.

No. 56.
Vice-Consul Devey to Acting Consul Hampson.—{Received at the Foreign Office, July 10.)
Sir, Van, June 15, 1891.
A BOMAN Catholic priest was murdered at the village of Savra, near Salmas, in
Persia, last winter, to which reference was made in my despatch of the 14th January.
On the 15th May an Armenian priest and his servant were murdered in revenge
in the same neighbourhood. The latter, named Mesrop, was “ Vartabed ” at the
Gregorian Monastery, St. Husginvortin (son of Hasgin, a nephew of St. Gregory the
Illuminator), in Bergri, of this vilayet; he had gone into Persia to visit some of his
flock who have churches in their villages there. Doubtless, full details as to this crime
will he known to Her Majesty’s Consul-General at Tabreez.
I have, &c.

. I HAVE the honour to submit for your information the following case, in which
