The Cossack Brigade.
The original strength of the Cossack Brigade was fixed in
1870 at from 400 to 600 men with 22 Persian officers, exclusive
of Russian officers and instructors. In 1880 a second regiment
of the same strength was formed ; the two were then called the
Cossack Brigade. The original budget was said to have been
07,000
tomans
10,000 Persian dinars, or a gold coin of that value.
. The brigade has been gradually increased in
numbers, till it now in 1809 lias an official strength of 1,500
men with a budget of
tomans
10,000 Persian dinars, or a gold coin of that value.
219,000. For further particulars
regarding the early history of the brigade, see Part I, Chapter
II, pages 83-84.
The commandant of the brigade gives his nominal strength
at:—
1 Commandant
3 Officers
6 Sous-Officiers
200 Officers
1,000 Mounted men, including artillery
500 Infantry ..
thus making a total of 1,700 men of Persian ranks. Owing,
however, to the high price of living in Teheran, the effective of
the brigade has always been below the nominal, and at the
present moment the actual number borne, on the rolls does not
exceed 1,411.
