Miscellaneous Irregular Bodies.
Camel Corps or Zamburakchi. Local Police or Militia.
This corps, the remnant of the mountain artillery of Persia,
is employed in the arsenal and seldom appears in public except
on the occasion of a review by H.M. the Shah.
It consists of 40 to 50 camels with old swivel guns. It is
quite obsolete and useless.
Various bodies of men known as Tufangchis, Sham-
khalchis, Jezailchis, armed with old and antiquated weapons,
have been employed from time immemorial by local districts
and cities for the preservation of life and property within their
borders.
This force has been distinguished by some writers with the
title of militia, but it would appear to be a misnomer, for it is a
purely local force and is not liable for any general service. Its
numbers are insignificant, and it would appear to be rapidly
disappearing, owing to the more general use of the regular
troops and Cossacks for police purposes. Colonel Smith in
1883 gave their numbers at 1,300 ; Curzon at 2,000. Nothing
approaching these numbers appear to be now employed (1899).

The report is divided into two parts. Part 1 consists of an introductory note, list of works consulted, chapters on general information about Persia and the history of the Persian Army (written by General Albert Houtum-Schindler), and an appendix on military pay, ranks, titles, and decorations. Part 2 consists of eleven chapters on recruitment, infantry, irregular cavalry, regular cavalry (the Cossack Brigade), artillery, miscellaneous irregular bodies, departments of the army, military schools, uniforms and equipment of men, uniform of officers, and decorations, medals, and orders.
The report has a preface written by the author in January 1900 (folio 3).
At the back of the volume is a map of Persia, Afghanistan, and Beluchistan [Baluchistan] (folio 84).
