Subjects- Sultan of Shehr and Mokaila’s
nephews’ Trust.
With reference to your letter So.A-53r-7r26,dated
the 15th hovember r929, regarding the Sultan of Shehr ana
Mokall^ s hephews* Trust, I aiu directed by the Governor in
Gouncil to enclose a copy of a note by the Remembrancer of
Legal Affairs, dated the 5/5th December xo05, and of tne
Advocate General’s opinion ho.77, dated the 18th idem.It
will be seen tneiefrom that tne arbitration was held to be an
enforced political settlement and not a Lu voluntary act of
the parties and the view was expressed tnat tne action take^x
amounted to an act of State. In 1906 a suit was tiled in tne
High Court by one of the creditors of Manassar, wno obtained
an attachment on the money deposited witn the Accountant-

General, Bombay» but it was held tnat inxe order oi tne High
Court would not operate as Manassar had no interest in tne
fund. The question of raising the attachment was therefore
dropped and the matter rested with Government lettei Ho.oB,
dated the 6th January 1906 , which formed an accompaniment to
your letter under reply, it will thus ce seen tnat the xrust
Pund has been hell by the Government.oi Bombay iu viitue of

This volume contains correspondence and other papers concerning loans and other assistance given to the Sultan of Shehr [Al Shihr] and Mokalla [Al Mukalla] in the Hadhramaut. The papers cover: the 1917 loan of 400,000 rupees Indian silver coin also widely used in the Persian Gulf. and a gift of arms and ammunition; the responsibility for the cost of the loan within the British and Indian Governments; matters connected to the repayment of this loan, including overdue payments; a further request, made in 1924, for a loan of 15,000,000 rupees Indian silver coin also widely used in the Persian Gulf. , an increased stipend, and the grant of more arms and ammunition; a dispute over the trust fund of two of the nephews of the former Sultan, Awadh bin Omar al-Qaeety ['Awadh bin 'Umar Al Qu'ayti].

It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. , Political Department; the Government of India, Accountant General Department; and Sultan Omar bin Awadth ['Umar bin 'Awadh Al Qu'ayti].

Included within the volume is a report by Lieutenant-Colonel George Stewart Symes, Resident and Commander-in-Chief at Aden, on his visit to Mokalla, 20 October 1928 (folios 64-67).
