good in our occupation of Paleatine, Trans-Jordan, and
Iraq and no 1X1 In Itm Sa’ud and his Arahe. They are all
paragons of all the virtues. I have never met a man so
woolly-wltted about anything. If they have hitherto
failed to display their talents in the running of their
own country - and here we skated lightly over Syrian
adventurers, corruption in high places, royal extravagance,
and such piffling matters as public finance and education -
it is solely because of the oppression exercised by rest
Britain on their frontiers, which detracts all their
attention and wastes all their energies. This Philby
kept on repeating.
The man is undoubtedly a monomaniac, of a kind and
now in a position to do us no good at all in our relations
with Ibn Sa’ud. He nevertheless assures me that he
has no intention of changing his nationality.
Now that he has found his milieu, I am much less
sorry for him than I was.
Yours sincerely#
