29 October 1895:*
Dear Mr Curzon,
I hope that vou will not hesitate at any time, in any
case r to ask me any question relating to any matter which you
think I can answer.
I have read Messrs Longman^s letter and the accounts.
I do not wonder that you feel a difficulty in under standing them
The £5 credited to the English account and debited to the
American account is a balance entry only. It* is charged againstfc
you in America and you are credited with it in England so that
it is wiped out.. This is done so that if the books are not sold
they stand to your debit or rather to the debit of your
American acc aunt,, then the balance due fro n the American account
ie brought down to the credit of the English account, less of'
course, as the American account shows the exportation expenses ailA
publication expenses in America.
I have gone through the account A and I'make the
following comments thereon:* This is the first time I'have seen
in a Longmans account 25 as 24.. Is that in theAgreement? The'
binding of 45'copies att £4 : 2 seems a most exorbitant charge;
it is nearly 2/* a copy.
I also take objection on principal to the charge of '
K# on Publication expenses in England and in America in a
profit-sharing agreement. This seems to me to be taking a prior
share of the profits which is contrary to tne spirit of ^ a
profit sharing arrangement,,but that again entirely depends
upon your Agreement for Persia* whether you can object, and I T
expect not, as Messrs Longmans make a practice of always taking
their 10^,, and i'’ it is agreed to there is nothing more to be
said.
I am dear Mr Curzon,
Faithfully yours,
The Hon.George Curzon.
