(4?i
(f) It was agreed that it was undesirable to include
in the treaty any provision on the lines of Article 2 of the
1916 Treaty whereby His Majesty T s Government would undertake
to protect Ibn Saud from foreigi aggression. Such a
commitment would bo derogatory to Ibn Saud and a possible
source of future embarrassment to His Majesty’s Government.
(g) The question of including in the revised treaty
an article on the lines of the third, fourth and last
sentences of Article 6 of the draft Anglo-Hashimite Treaty
of 192b with the object of securing Ibn Saud’s recognition
of the right of His Britannic Majesty to appoint a British
Agent to reside at Jeddah or some other seaport town of Ibn
Baud’s dominions was discussed. It was felt that any such
attempt would inevitably lead to a demand by Ibn Saud to
appoint an agent in London, a demand which the Foreign Office
would feel it necessary to resist. It was, therefore,
considered that the purpose in view would be adequately
served by referring indirectly to the existence of this right
in some article primarily dealing with another subject, and
it was agreed that this could be effected by inserting in the
revised treaty something on the lines of Article 10 of the
draft Anglo-Has hi mite treaty which refers to the appointment
of Consular Agents by His Britannic Majesty at Jeddah and
other seaports. It was decided to recommend that, subject
to the concurrence of the Government of India, (who Mr.
Wakely considered should be consulted in the matter)
articles similar to Articles 10, 11 and 12 of the draft
Anglo-Hashimite Treaty should be embodied;
(h) The general view was that the term oj o.ue ore t}
should be for seven years, renewable by mutual agree ent
upon the expiry of that period, and that it should be
concluded personally with Ibn Saud as King of the Hejaz and
Sultan
