The indebtedness to the Bank of England referred to in
the Board f s letter of the 15th July was said now to amount
to about £1,800*

Mr. Shohet represented t^iat his firm are relying on the
proceeds of the sale of the goods in question now lying at
Basra, and of other goods which have been shipped to Basra
but stopped by the firm's instructions at Bombay in view of
the difficulty whiqh has arisen, in order to reduce their
indebtedness to the banks and their other creditors, and that
they are anxious that the goods should not be sold be^ow their
proper value.
As regards Eliahon Ini, to whom the firm wish to transfer
their agency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, headed by an agent. at Basra, Mr.Shohet stated that this man is a
native of Bagdad and came to Basra from Persia. In the event
of there being any objection to Eliahon Ini, Mr. Shohet asked

that his firm might be allowed to employ Joseph Gareh and
Semouka who, he said, are an old established firm at Basra.

enquiries which it might be possible to make.
