men formed the raiding party, and the operations were carried out as a punishment
for hostile acts committed against Nejd merchants.
12. In conclusion, Bin Saud’s debts are once again causing him anxiety. I hear
he owes Qassira merchants nearly six lacs One lakh is equal to one hundred thousand rupees of rupees Indian silver coin also widely used in the Persian Gulf. , while in Bahrein alone he is
indebted to Abdul Aziz al Qusaibi to the extent of one lac One lakh is equal to one hundred thousand rupees . The latter is getting
anxious about his money, I know. I quite expect Bin Saud will shortly again ask
His Majesty’s Government for an increase in his subsidy. His plea will be that with
Government’s money he is keeping the peace of Arabia by controlling his Ikhwan,
and so preventing them overrunning the Hejaz. One realises that economy is the
cry nowadays, especially with politicians at home for ever asking awkward questions ;
yet I, for one, consider our subsidy to Bin Saud is being well earned, and results have
been’obtained out of all proportions to the money spent. I would like myself to see
the subsidy increased to G,000Z. per month.
13. Since writing the above, I have received—
(1) A telegram from Civil / Commissioner, Baghdad, dated 11th August 1920, to
the effect that His Majesty’s Government have decided to present Bin Saud with a
gift of 5,000/. in recognition of his statesmanlike conduct in abstaining from the Haj
this year. Also that the question of granting him a G.C.I.E. is under consideration.
This news is eminently satisfactory.
(2) A letter from Bin Saud, dated 2nd August, urging on Government that his
subsidy be increased. I rather anticipated this was coming.
(3) A bundle of letters and reports from K. S. Syed Siddiq Hasan from Riyadh.
Copies of these are being forwarded with this. K. S. Syed Siddiq Hasan gives
most interesting news regarding the Nejran and Assir raids.
(4) News of the capture of Ebha, the capital of Asir, by Abdul Aziz Ibn Mus aid.
His immediate demand for money is probably in connection with this.
