on conversations belonged to the old Kisbftl Oirn.a, a party
favoured, and it might almost be said created, by Lord Cromer.
Zaghlul himself was one of Lord Cromer's men. The ' : isbel
Oitt'.a party used to be at daggers drawn with the Hisbel Watani,
which was really the anti-British party. The mistakes which
had been made by us had led them to think, that •■e meant to
destroy entirely their nationality and their individuality
as a opoole, and to swallow the- up in the British Empire.
This feeling had brought the two parties together, and all
joined in the cry of "No Protectorate” and "Long live com
plete independence". As always happen? d in such combinations,
the extremists got the upper hand, but the deep underlying
difference was still there. On the one hand there were those
who neither thought they could do without us nor wanted to
try, and who knew that if left to themselves they would fall
under some other much loss lenient domination. These men
still want'd to loan upon the British, but not as subjects.
They wanted to be able to hold their heads up in Egypt and
not to appear less patriotic than the opposing side. He
had b-n one o' those who had recommended.^ after the
Vfar, that His Majesty's Sovernment should receive m/.elcga-
tion in London, and he now realised that the refusal had done
a good deal of harm arched given colour in Egypt to the idea
that we not only wanted a Protectorate but that our intention
was to absorb Egypt entirely into the British Empire.
