21. As regards the defence of the line lying in Persian territory until its
final disposal, I have reason to modify my original opinion. It is extremely
improbable that the Damanis would have any inducement to raid in this
direction for a considerable time ; and, even if they wished to do so, the Rekis
and Ismailzais, whose moral is much higher than it was before we came to
the Sarhad, have every inducement to earn the handsome allowances they are
now drawing and at the same time gratify their dislike of the Damanis by
refusing them passage. Moreover the efficient Persian troops at Duzdap and
Mirjawa are in themselves more than sufficient for the protection of the
railway.
I therefore advocate that, if it fits in with the rest of our policy towards
Persia, we should withdraw at once all British troops from Duzdap and
Mirjawa. Owing to the fact of Makranis trained as tribal reserves being avail
able and ready to join regular corps, one platoon of the Makran Levy Corps
can be sent to occupy the Mirjawa and Kachha posts, and will be ready to
take over within a fortnight of receiving orders for a temporary increase of the
Corps.
22. As for the permanent arrangements for the defence of this frontier I
have, with my No. 522 of 31st January 1921, submitted my proposition state
ment for an increase of 200 men to the Makran Levy Corps. These should be
in their posts and armed within 6 weeks of receiving orders. Their training
would continue by platoons in their posts.
