Sir,
Trith reference to your telegram of the 13th instant,
I have the honour to confirm mine of today T s date in
reply, recommending the sanction of oix thousand rtupees
(Rs. 6,000J to indemnify such of the members of the stall
of the Lazaretto here, whose services are being dispensed
with under the orders of Government for the closing ol
that institution.
It will be ssen from my above-quoted telegram that 1
have suggested that the above sum be issued purely as an
advance to the personnel concerned, which advance might,
if considered necessary, be ultimately recovered by
Government.
Yfhilst recognizing that there is no obligation
involved on the part of His Majesty's Government towards
the dismissed officials, who with a xew exceptions, are
enemy aliens, however, in view of their willing co-
operation with us since the Occupation, ana ot the tact
that there are several months' salaries owing to them on
account of the war, I concur with the recommendations
contained in Major Bellows' telegram of the iSrd to grant
them an advance of three months' salary from the
beginning ot September.
