This file contains sections of the handwritten manuscript of the book Persia and the Persian Question by George Nathaniel Curzon. These papers come as part of the full handwritten draft of the book that comprises the shelfmarks Mss Eur F111/30-32. The printed edition of the book, which was published in 1892, can be found in the file with the shelfmark Mss Eur F111/33.

The papers in this file cover the ancient and modern history, geography, and social and domestic politics of Persia during the late nineteenth century, when George Curzon lived there temporarily. The manuscript also discusses the Russian and British presence in Persia and the author's views on the two countries' respective strategies for influence in the country. In addition, the papers include some of George Curzon's own travel writing while in Persia.

Pasted on to some of the papers are newspaper cuttings from The Times . These cuttings consist of extracts from the yet to be published Persia and the Persian Question, which were published in the newspaper in 1889-90.

This file is arranged into four parts. It proceeds in the author's intended order for the published book.

Physical characteristics

Foliation: this file consists of four physical files. The foliation sequence commences at the front cover of the first file with 2 and proceeds through the first file (ff 2-176), then the second (ff 177-353), third (ff 354-496) and finally the fourth file (ff 497-677), terminating at the inside back cover with 677; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto The front of a sheet of paper or leaf, often abbreviated to 'r'. side of each folio.
