that I have time and again coionented on th« very
meagre results attending the blockade and the serious
political results ol the same in Arabia. At the same
time, knowing the facts of the case, I laust strongly
object to Captain Clayton's Indictment of Colwasji
hnshaw (vide his 3rd para.). This fine holds the

dhows (never to be trusted) were discontinued. The
steamers have been a great boon to idri ;i personally
though naturally not to his dho.v- ownera- nor to uhow-
owners all down the Arabian littoral; nor again, to the
population along this coastal area and within, who have
had, for years now, to pay exorbitant orices for the
necessaries of life. I nave again and again urged,
while at Aden as first Assistant Resident, and again
here in Cairo, that the blockade was a waste of mips
and u personnel, for although the R.N. patrol was
sufficiently vigilant, under great difficulties, to
restrict *11 but a .ninlnu i of supplier entering
Arabian ports save through the reco piiaed inlet of
Cl , yet, the goods enterin ' here were snuggled away
down the coast, ami behind the cover of the reefs,
by dhows, and also by iand-carav ms. Goods, then, have
been going by stealth to places where they were
prohibited by the Naval patrols from the sea-side. The
net result was Arab exasperation at the delay, trouble,
and expense they were put to by this roundabout form of i
traffic. It was in the main to Arabs that dhow A term adopted by British officials to refer to local sailing vessels in the western Indian Ocean. -owners

The papers are arranged in approximate chronological order from the rear to the front of the volume.

The subject 3086 (German War: Arabia/Arabia: Red Sea Islands/Arabia: Arms for Sayyid Idrissi) consists of six volumes, IOR/L/PS/10/558-563. The volumes are divided into nine parts, with part 1 comprising the first volume, part 2 comprising the second volume, parts 3-4 comprising the third volume, part 5 comprising the fourth volume, parts 6-7 comprising the fifth volume, and parts 8-9 comprising the sixth volume.
