With reference to your letter No. 10376 of today’s date
I am sorry to learn that the
Political Resident
A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency.
is unable to
agree to any increase in the number of dhows plying between
Massaua and Gizan.
I also regret for your implicit refusal to exempt the
steamer "Nilo" from calling at Csmaran in her homeward
voyage as requested by the ifritrean Government for the
reasons stated in my letter No# 796/IX of the 0 -7th August
1917. ^
I am to point out that the needs of Colonia Eritrea and
generally the statements and requests of its Government are
the

des, which ere imposed upon our Colony, f, re highly prejudi-

of Eritrea demand that dhows loaded with oxen be exempted
from calling at Oemaran when returning from Gizan, if the
Besidency was going to tender a denial to the requests of
the above mentioned Government.
However it may be, I have wired the contents of your
answer to the Government of Eritrea and hope that the steps
they will take through our Embassy in London in this matter
may be more successful than mine.
