from Moham-
merah to Gwattar, both inclusive, is now under Persian administra
tion. That portion of the coast which extends from below Mohammerah
to the shrine of Shah Abul Shah, near Bandar Dilam, is inhabited main
ly by Chaab Arabs and their dependents. The Chaab country, as well as
.the districts of Mohammerah, Shatt-el-Arab and Karun, were formerly
under the immediate jurisdiction of the Shaikh of Mohammerah who, in
addition to his de jure position as Governor, was de facto hereditary ruler,,
under the Shah of Persia, of the locally autonomous district of Mohanf-
merah. Sheikh Khazal Khan, however, with whom the British Govern
ment had long been in friendly relations and on whom they had bestowe’d
.various personal and titular honours, openly defied the Central Govern
ment; with the result that, in ’April 1925, his heritage was confiscated
and he himself arrested and carried to Tehran, where he has since been'
Retained as a political prisoner.

Jninistered by the Persian Government: from Mohammerah to Shah
Abul Shah inclusive by the Governor General of Khuzistan, and from
thence on to Bushire by the Governor of all the Ports and Islands in the
Persian Gulf

(ff 329-405 and ff 540-616) and Oman sections (ff 423-477 and ff 485-539), which cover the periods 1806-1927 and 1798-1928 respectively.
