Translation of a petition dated 15th HamadhsJt 1356 (18th
November 1937) from Jumah bin Farhan to the Political Ageno,
Bahrain.
A.C.
I beg to draw your attention that I was previously a subject
of the Government of Saudi Arabia and was a slave of one oi the
Ministers of H.M, the King. One day I got an opportunity to
throw the yoke of slavery and came here to take refuge at the
Agency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, headed by an agent. where i was given a manumission ceroi^.icate• .or which I
am grateful to the Government, ^he unfortunate circumstances
have compelled me to come again and seek the help of your
Government as neither the people of this place nor the British
Government helped me in getting an employment by which I could
earn a livelihood. I was thinking of. either committing suicide
or adopting robbery as my profession, but I was very pleased to
hear of your arrival and am now submitting this petition to
you hoping that you may get me an employment. I can read and
write Arabic and type and can drive a motor car. If there is
no vacancy I beg you kindly to grant me a travel permit and a
passage to India as I hope to get some sort of employment if 9
go there. This is my final petition and if you do not conply
with my request I should not be blamed if I commit an unlawful
act because I have made up my mind to join the robbers and am
not afraid to undergo any punishment. I do not like to live in
such a miserable condition and there is no alternative but to
adopt the course which 1 explained above. I am perfectly aware
that if I am caught red-handed while commiting robbery I will
undoubtedly be sent to prison. Hty only desire is to go to jail
where I shall work and live a happy life.
fnis is what I have in mind and decision rests with you.

The file contains correspondence related to two slavery related incidents raised with the Political Agency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, headed by an agent. in Bahrain. The first case (folios 1-22) involves two male ex-slaves who were apprehended by the Iranian police while travelling by boat to Henjam [Jazīreh-ye Hengām] to recover their belongings. One of the men escaped from detention and boarded HMS Bideford , where his statement was passed on to the Bahrain Agency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, headed by an agent. . The second case (folios 23-45) involves two men owned by the Saudi Arabian Chargé d'Affaires in Baghdad. Both men absconded to Bahrain, where their statements were taken down (folios 29 and 30-33). Both men were given manumission certificates, authorised by the Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. . One of the manumitted slaves later complained of being unable to find work in Bahrain, and requested permission to travel to India (folios 39-41). The office notes reveal that Agency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, headed by an agent. staff considered the man 'lazy', and turned down his application for passage to India (folio 43).
