indication that the Persians attached vital importance,
and repeated that, while he and the Government of India
would be willing to consider it in the last resort, if it
was essential to clinch the negotiations, and a
satisfactory settlement could not be secured without it,
he did not think that it ought otherwise to be given.
He reminded the Committee of the serious difficulties
in the way of securing an alternative site. The general
sense of the Committee was, however, that the matter mighjt
again be put to the Government of India in the light of
the views stated to have been expressed by the Political
Residents, and that the possibility of using Basra as
an alternative site should be examined by the Colonial
Office. The matter was to be dealt with urgently, in
view of its possible importance from the point of view of
the negotiations.
It should be said at once that there appears to
be no foundation for Sir Robert Clive’s suggestion that
Sir Lionel Haworth was opposed to the retention of the
Residency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, established in the provinces and regions considered part of, or under the influence of, British India. at Bushire. When he was consulted on the
possibility of splitting the Consulate-General and
