( a ) jhft 1841 Treaty .- In the negotiations with
Persia on the Commercial Treaty we have consistently
taken the view that any treaty agreed between us mltet
set out in detail the obligations from #iich Persia is
to be released (notably the Treaty of Pans of 1857
and the 1903 and 1920 Customs Conventions; the abrogation
of the 1883 Slavery Convention would be separately
provided for in the Slavery article), ihe Persians, on
the contrary, have equally consistently pressed that
we should accept an article stating that, wishing as we
do to facilitate the accomplishment of the desire of the
Shah of Persia to relieve himself of all obligations
incumbent upon him under the treaties, conventions and
agreements concluded between the two States prior to the
year 1£28, we agree to their abrogation. It is quite
possible that the Minister is right in thinking that
Taimourtache is anxious in this way to cut the ground
from under our feet as regards the
Residency

at Bushire. We may, however, agree with the Foreign
Office that there is no reason why this provision should
not be abrogated, provided that we come to terms about
the removal of the
Residency
An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, established in the provinces and regions considered part of, or under the influence of, British India.
, on the understanding that
it will have to be specially mentioned in the Treaty
among the other instruments which are to be abrogated.
