A long debate took place on the draft T Iraq
Currency La?/. After explaining the benefits of this
Bill the Minister for Finance stated that it was
inconvenient for the finances of a State to be based upon
a foreign currency. It would be a moral and economic
advantage for the T Iraq nation to have a national currency.
The Minister for Economics and Communications
explained the valuable benefits of this Bill and asked
the Chamber to pass it. He added that the present
political position between Great Britain and India would
no doubt affect the value of the rupee. Consequentlyif
Indian currency was retained in ’Iraq the country's
finances would be liable to be influenced by external
political events over which ’Iraq had no control. He
spoke about the headquarters of the Currency Board and said
that if the Board was establi^ied in an important economic
and commercial centre like London all financial circles
here and abroad would be assured of the capability of the
Board from a financial point of view.

It also includes: a copy of a telegram from the Secretary of State for the Colonies to the High Commissioner for Iraq, concerning tenders and the time scale for the introduction of the currency; and copy extracts of ‘Intelligence Report No. 7’ dated 1 April 1931, reporting on meetings of the Chamber of Deputies of the Iraqi Parliament of 19 March, 21 March and 24 March 1931, regarding the draft Iraq Currency Law.
