It ia clear therefore that the agreement will
require'to be redrafted in consultation with Nuri himself
with a view to making it more precise than it is and the
moment for doing that will be when we have acquired all
the information we need both regarding the political
situation in this tract and regarding the feasibility
of a railway via Jauf from the technical point of view.
For these reasons and because another so favourable
opportunity for inspecting the suggested alignment from
Jauf to Najaf may not occur I am, at the pressing request
of Major Holt, insisting on facilities being placed at
our disposal now for traversing the desert between here
and Najaf and messengers have recently gone to Nuri with
a letter from me explaining my wishes and asking his
permission. If it is granted we hope to start without
delay and to reach Najaf via Nukhaib and Hayadhiya wells
in ten days from starting or about the 10th June. I shall
of course seise the earliest possible opportunity of
returning to Annum, by aeroplane if possible; but the
present opportunity of examining the ground from* the
railway point of view is too good a one to throw away
and another may not occur unless we are prepared to accept
any conditions that may be dictated to us.
I am led to give this warning by the very
unfavourable impression I have gained during the last
few weeks of most of the prominent members of the Shalan

Correspondence, minutes, draft papers, and memoranda relating to the delineation of the boundary between the Kingdom of Nejd and Transjordan Used in three contexts: the geographical region to the east of the River Jordan (literally ‘across the River Jordan’); a British protectorate (1921-46); an independent political entity (1946-49) now known as Jordan .
