Your despatch T.J. of 16th June. Mr.Philby only
authorisedto establish a basis for friendly relations ty
undertaking a journey aflter satisfying himself by so doing
no risk of extending Imperial commitments in Trans Jordania
vras involved. Neither he or Abdullah are in a position to
undertake such responsibilities as are referred to in
Articles 2, 3 and 4 of the agreement on behalf of His
Majesty's Government nor is he in a position to sign
Treaties on behalf of Abdullah. Both Abdullah and Philby
should be informed without delay that this agreement was
concluded without ^hority of His Majesty’s Government
and His Majesty’s Government are not bound thereby. You
should ensure that notification to same effect reached the
other parties to this treaty without delay. Mr. Phil by
should also be informed that he should only proceed with
negotiations unde? direct instructions transmitted to him
from me through you* He should understand that any project
involving increased Imperial expenditure in Trans Jordania
is open to objections of most serious nature and His
Majesty’s Government must on no account be committed without
specific instructions to anything of the kind. Mr.Philby’s
position appears from your despatches T.J.26 and 27 of the

Correspondence, minutes, draft papers, and memoranda relating to the delineation of the boundary between the Kingdom of Nejd and Transjordan Used in three contexts: the geographical region to the east of the River Jordan (literally ‘across the River Jordan’); a British protectorate (1921-46); an independent political entity (1946-49) now known as Jordan . The papers deal with matters such as the status of the Jauf [al-Jawf] region, the idea for a Baghdad-Haifa railway, numerous raids and counter raids along the border area, and the proposal and preparations for a conference in Kuwait to settle the boundary issue.

Correspondence is principally between officials at the India Office The department of the British Government to which the Government of India reported between 1858 and 1947. The successor to the Court of Directors. , Colonial Office, Foreign Office, and Admiralty.
