quarantine imposed in such, eases.
Much inconvenience is of course caused to travellers in
the Gulf whenever quarantine is imposed; as far as Bnshire
is concerned it amounts to a sojourn on the Quarantine i si arid
for onl^ 12 hours, but it involves a long jouniep in an open
boat to the Quarantine Island ?md later to the port and of
course a good deal of delay* A charge of 2d krone is made
but no quarantine measures are attempted. The disinfecting
apparatus erected by us in the past is not utilized and no
effort is made to disinfect the dirty clothing of even 3rd
class passengers.
There is one other point which I desire to bring to your
notice. I have always understood that the period of quarantine
prescribed under the Paris Convention was 5 days froia time of
departure from the infected port. The .Persian quarantine
medical officer contends however that the Paris Convention
has since been modified and that the period is now 6 days,
but has not shown me any ruling to that effect. Hail steamers
generally reach Bashire 5-J- days out of Bombay, and the,/ there
fore impose quarantine for half a day. I should be glad to
be informed whether the period is 5 days or 6 days. If it is
the former then mail steamers would be out of quarantine on
arrival at Bushire, and the imposition of quarantine would
be an academic matter as far as this port is concerned.
