Reference your 74—439 f, dated 13th July I send herewith for favour of
transmission to His Britannic Majesty’s Minister, Tehran, the information he
requires in paragraph 3 of his telegram No. 56, dated 3rd July 1925.
Marine Motor-engined Dhose, hulls built and engine fitted locally have
been in use from Bushire Port for some time and have proved very seaworthy
and successful.
I instance the Barmiary and Chillingar of the A. P. 0. C., which run
regularly between Kbarag Island, Genewah and Bushire and which go to sea in
all weathers.
The local boatbuilder has now had experience in building hulls adapted for
motor engines, and I therefore do not think it necessary to go outside Bushire
to have the required vessel built.
The Quarantine Service wants boats of similar design but slightly smaller
than the Barmiari and Chillingar.
Mr. H. Gulzad the Iqcal Naval Contractor, who has built most of the local
dhows in use, and who knows local conditions, and our particular requirements
well, advises a boat of dimensions about
Feet.
Length . . . . . . . . . . 33
Breadth .......... 10
Draught . . . . . 3
I think such a hull should be fitted with not less than a 25 H. P. Engine
if the boat is to carry out the work required of her.
It is, however, an absolute essential of her construction that .copper nails
are used throughout.
Iron nails quickly rust, and work loose, with the result that planks soon
commence to start; and the hull is always requiring petty repair; and with
the vibration of a motor engine the conditions are accentuated, and the h e
of the vessel is considerably shortened.
I attach as an Appendix the full details of the cost of building and main
taining, and running such a boat in the Quarantine Service; and 1 have
especially noted against each item of information the source from which i
was obtained.
