If such a boat were obtained it would be possible to do away with anv
extra hiring of boats for the use of passengers. ^ ^
This item is one liable to great fluctuation according as to whether Quar
antine is being enforced or not and cannot be well budgetted for.
The possession of a motor boat would eliminate this uncertain factor from
the budget, and the increased efficiency would well repay the extra cost over
the present system for hiring sailing boats for inspection visits.
As long as the Quarantine station is maintained on its present site the
present helium and bellumchis would have to be maintained.
Ling ah .—The average number of vessels using this port is 10 per month.
Inspection takes place at the anchorage, which is an open roadstead three
miles from the shore.
For this purpose a boat is hired at the yearly cost of Krans 3,000.
The Quarantine Station is situated 2 miles northwards of the Customs
House; and passengers detained in Quarantine are conveyed there when neces
sary in hired sailing boats. The expenditure on this head in 1302 was
Rs. 420 or roughly Krans 1,300.
The total cost of boat hire therefore in 1302 was Krans 4,300. The
Quarantine Medical Officer in his 1924 report states : “ The present system
of hiring a boat by the month is not very satisfactory ; the owner of the boat
naturally gets the cheapest possible men to man her. A boat purchased out
right and five men on fixed wages to man her, would be an improvement. A
motor boat would be desirable ”. A suitable sailing boat would cost about
™^ ns b 000 and her crew and maintenance would come to about Krans
4000. If a motor boat was provided on the same lines as that suggested for
flushire, but smaller and with a less powerful engine the cost would be
roughly—
