ZAHRDA.—Vol. Ill, page 646.
Situated 26^ miles beyond Jahrum on the road to Lake Niriz in
bars, is a large village with gardens and a few date palms and much culti
vation. Supplies of grain are assured, and there are at least 100 cows and
from 300 to 400 sheep available. A large white domed tomb close to the
village on the north-west sides forms a good landmark to the surrounding
country.— {Stotherd, June 1893.)
FERDISHKUH.—Vol. Ill, page 242.
30! miles beyond Jahrum on the road to Lake Niriz in Fars, is a largo
village with extensive fruit gardens and excellent cultivation. Supplies
are very good and water is abundant. The surrounding country is infested
by robbers.— [Stotherd, June 1893.)
FASA.—Lat. 2S° 59' 45 // . Vol. Ill, page 234.
Fasa has a population of 4,000. Its principal trade is in opium and
tobacco which go to Shiraz. The opium trade varies, some years as much
as 5,000 mans* being exported, while in a bad year perhaps only 3,000.
There is a small manufactory of hukahs and earthenware and large num
bers of chaddas are made here.
Supplies are excellent. There is a very good bazar, thatched in with
boughs, with a stream of water running down the centre. Fruit, vege
tables and lucern grass are especially good here, and all ordinary supplies
are obtainable in considerable quantities from the surrounding country
and villages.
There are two caravansarais and a post office was started; but as no one
used it it was done away with. The town is governed by a naib, who
also governs the neighbouring small villages.
The date palm flourishes here, so the cold cannot be excessive. Snow,
however, lies on Kuh Tudej during the winter months ; during the sum
mer the heat is not very great.
The road throughout from Jahrum, 43! miles, is very good. No steep
gradients or stones; in fact the whole way is over a succession of plains,
rising with an almost imperceptible slope. Troops should move easily on
this route. The only things to impede artillery are the irrigation chan
nels which cross the road. These, as a rule, are only spanned by a bridge
about one yard wide. Some places also in wet weather get very deep and
sticky.—• {Stotherd, June 1893.)
• 1 man — 7J lbs. 5,000 mans — 17 tons (about).
