It is not known whether the Ameer took any steps on receipt of this
petition.
On the 26th May 1871, when the danger from Yacooh’s rebellion was at its
height, the Ameer received a letter from Zoolficar and Mahomed Saleh, com
plaining against Ismail, their own brother, and praying for forgiveness.
The Ameer sent no reply, hut remarked on the misfortune of the Barukzai
family, which was such that its members could not live quietly in a foreign
State without endeavouring to ruin each other.
346. I return now to the events at the capital in September 1868.
At the beginning of his restored rule, it was an object of importance in
the Ameer’s eyes to bind his courtiers together by family ties.
Within a week of his restoration marriages were arranged between Yacoob
Khan himself and the daughter of Yaheea Khan , raJ Peshawuree, and between
Yacoob’s daughter and Uslum’s son.
To one of ITslum’s daughters, Mahomed Ayoob Khan, the Ameer’s young
est son but one, was betrothed on the 29th September.
347. Nevertheless, as early as the middle of October,* the British Agent

the Ameer’s Court were much embarrassing him.
348. Feroz Shah’s reception in Cabul. —The Governor of Jellalabad report-
ed on the 3rd* week of September that

leroz Shah had leit Swat, and come to
Jellalabad, owing to news of the military preparations of the Indian Government
(those directed against the tribes of the BlackMountain are of course meant).
The Ameer wrote to him that he should not shelter a known enemy of
the English Government, but should give him Bs. 500, and pack him off into
independent territory.
This, however, was not done. On the 25th Eeroz Shah entered Cabul,
and was committed to the care of Uslum. On the 29th he was given Bs. 1,600
from the Ameer, Yacoob, Uslum, and Eutteh Mahomed.
On the 5th October he got Bs. 500 more, and on the 6th was sent off vid
Kohistan and Khinjan accompanied by nine Hindoostanees. It was said to be
his intention to go to Budukshan.

349. The Ameer’s feelings towards, and correspondence ivith, the Govern
ment of India.
Within the first few days* after his res
toration, he expressed himself as follows :
“ Notwithstanding the many trials and misfortunes of every kind that I have endured,
nothing has up to the present day proceeded from me which should be a cause of offence to the
British Government. Further, I have neither by hint or sign, nor openly or secretly, made
cause with any other power, except the powerful English Government. For instance, during
the Swat and Boneyr difficulty (Ambeyla Campaign), simply for the purpose of pleasing the
British Government, I ruined my own son-in-law, Saadut Khan Mohmund, and caused myself

(6.) Of these preparations the most exaggerated idea got abroad. This same Governor of Jellalabad said that 50 or
60,000 men of the Indian army were being collected in Huzara with the view of passing into Budukshan, and from
thence to Peshawur, making a combined attack on Swat and Boneyr,
