4i82. On receipt of these letters the
Ameer wrote to Alum and Ibrahim to the
effect*—
“ that they should, in accordance with previous orders, desist from interfering with the

483. On the 6th January intelligence was received from Ibrahim, sent on
the 26th December, that in compliance with his request, Alum had come over
from Tukhtapooh

Similarly Alum wrote at tbe same time, tbat Ibrabim bad received him
with boner and kindness ; and tbat be would not desist from doing good service
to tbe Sirdar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. ,
484 . Tbe reports from Ibrabim and Alum were, that as soon as tbe Ameer
of Bokhara clearly understood tbat Buduksban belonged to tbe Afghan Govern
ment, be bad directed Yakoob Anak to withdraw to the north of tbe Oxus
tbe force he had advanced. Jebander Sbab, therefore, after burning Tungee-
Killa, bad retired to Trans-Oxus. About tbe same time tbe Bokhara troops also
retired from Koolab.
485. Although by this time tbe prospects of tranquillity in tbe direction
of Toorkistan bad become brighter, Beramoz Khan on tbe 8th January received
from Baood Sbab a mysterious letter of warning regarding Toorkistan affairs.
Tbe Cabul authorities thought the meaning was tbat Abdool Bahman was
tampering with the Toorkistan troops, consequently Beramoz Khan was sent
off in haste with 20 sowars to inspect those troops.
486. On the 10th January a letter was received from Alum, reporting* (1)

Surteep, with him ; (2) that be had detained tbe second envoy for tbe present;
(3) tbat tbe Ameer of Bokhara had now made over tbe territories of Koolab
Hissar and Deh-i-now to Mahomed Yakoob Anak, and tbe latter bad written
promising to imprison Sirdar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. Abdool Bahman Khan, and urging Alum to do tbe
same with regard to Surrah Beg; (4) saying—
ff I will despatch Meer Surrah Beg Khan to Cabul, if Mahomed Yakoob Anak keeps the
Sirdar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. in confinement, otherwise I shall keep the Meer here with me.”
487. On tbe 18th of January a letter was received from Ibrabim, saying
tbat, at Surrah Beg’s request, he bad, taking security for bis appearance,
given him leave faJ to visit bis family at Koondooz, with the ulterior purpose of
getting through him information as to what course tbe Ameer of Bokhara was
(a) When the Ameer heard of tliis, he wrote to Alum blaming him for allowing Surrah Beg to go to Koondooz, and
for not exercising the plenary power which he possessed in civil matters to stop this movement. He was now at once
to re-call Surrah Beg to Tukhtapool, so that he might do no mischief in frontier matters.—(Diary of 1st—3rd February.)
