514. The next news was that Feramoz intended soon to apply for permission

was expedient that he should remain in it some few more days * but when
Yacoob went into rebellion he was urgently summoned back to Cabul.
515. Of this rising Ibrahim was urged by his adherents to take advantage
and to follow Yacoob’s example, but
he said—*

516. In the diary of 19th December there is an entry of a complaint
preferred by Alum against Ibrahim, who was, he said, disposed to kill him, so
that he was afraid of his life. The agent thought that tiie complaint had pro
bably for its sole motive the removal of Ibrahim, the expediency of which was,
indeed, seriously debated by the Ameer and his counsellors. On the 29th
December there came a formal alternative from Alum, that either he or Ibra
him should be recalled.
The Ameer got angry and, turning to Moostowfee Hubeeboolla Khan,
remarked as follows :
“*In consultation with you, Cabul officials, I sent Sirdar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. Mahomed Ibrahim Khan in

The Moostowfee represented—-
“ The complaints of Naib Mahomed Alum Khan against the Sirdar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. are entirely false.
I am neithei ignorant of Toorkistan matters, nor your ill-wisher. Had I known even of a
trivial act of tyranny occurring on the part of the Sirdar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. , I sh mid have reported it to you.
The main object of the Naib is to be allowed to govern Toorkistan single-handed and to plun
der it."
The Ameer has therefore written to Sirdar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. Mahomed Ibrahim Khan as
follows :
“ I have no member of my family with me at present in Cabul, and it was consequently
desirable that I should have summoned you at once to Cabul ; but as the Toorkistan route has
become impassable on account of the snow, you should come to me by New Year's Day. Until
that time yon should consider Naib Mahomed Alum Khan your hhidmuigar (meanino
subordinate), and agree well with him."
He had, when Alum’s first complaint came on the 19th December, sent off
Mahomed Zaman, Superintendent of the Bala Hissar, to reconcile the two
authorities. His first report, received on the 9th January, was that the ill-feeling
between them was due to the machinations of Ibrahim’s adherents ; but that
Ibrahim had determined to leave Toorkistan at once, news which much relieved

Toorkistan desiring them to agree well with the Naib, giving out that, on New

therefore the Ameer’s grandson. Would be deputed to ToOrMstaU (in place
of Ibrahim ; but in reality he had no such intention, considering that Alum was
quite able to manage the Province alone.
And then just as Ibrahim was approaching the capital, on his return (28th
January 1871), there came another letter from Zaman Khan, saying—
