pressed officials ordered him to realize the above misappropriated amount himself \m\u\n
and not to annoy his (the Ameer's) old officials. The Meer, however, represented that h
could not recover the above money, unless he were granted the power of dismissing 0 r annoint
ing officials, and consequently his representations not being approved of, he drew back fr
his offer/'

The people have composed'some verses in his dispraise, of which the follow
ing is one :
“ Sahib-i-duftur-um ba-nadanee,
“ Abdah Sofee-Khan Bayance.
“That is, I, Sofee Khan Bayanee, a servant, have become superintendent of the duftur on
account of my stupidity) /’
572. On the 15th and 1 8th August news came of the rising of the tribe of
Bakur Khail in Khost. They refused to pay revenue or to have their lands measured
(this is the first intelligence that any such measurement had been intended or
started); attacked the tribe of Torees, killed some of them, and plundered their cattle,
raised some of the Ooloos (militia) of the tribes, and then went at Khojah Meer
Gool Khan, Uslum’s Deputy, the Governor, and killed him and his companions.
Meer Gool Khan had written to Wullee Mahommed in Koorum for assistance,
hut he had expressed his inability to comply with the request owing to the sick
state of his troops. Uslum was at once sent off with two of the regiments that
had arrived from Toorkistan, a cavalry regiment under Colonel Sirdar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. Khan,
1,000* irregular horse and four guns, two light ones, and two belonging to a mule
battery. Uslum was to write beforehand, charging the heads of the tribes in
Khost to fulfil their obligations and*raise their levies. Wullee Mahommed was
told to raise the militia of Koorum, and lastly, Ursulla Khan from Zoormut was to
send one of his infantry regiments to assist Uslum.
573. On the 22nd August news came of a similar but less serious rising of
the Sofee tribe in that part of Koorum which was managed by Sirdar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. Ahmed
Khan, Peshawuree. They had killed and wounded twenty-two of his Jazailchees
in resisting a heavy demand for revenue. The Ameer was, in consequence of the
rising in Khost, obliged to postpone their punishment.
574. Before order had been quite restored in Khost, but as soon as he

Cabul, hoping that he would be left as Governor thereof, if the Ameer left it to
reduce his rebellious son. But the Ameer told him that as Uslum was to go with

The Bakur Khail, hearing of the advance of Uslum’s force, went off with their property into the country of the
Mingulas in Yaghistan and prepared to resist attack. Uslura
Diary ending 4th September. endeavoured to sow dissension among them, and some of the
“ levy tribes” of Khost, enemies of the Bakur Khail, offered
to take over the management of their lands. He had been told to apply to Wullee Mahommed in Koorum for
cavalry reinforcements, but wrote that that Sirdar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. had none. The Ameer said that Wullee Mahommed had cavalry
with him, though Uslum did not know it, that he was therefore to march into Koorum, get some cavalry from Wullee
Mahommed, and then go on to Khost.—[Diary ending 1st September.]
On the 10th September, Uslum came in contact with the rebellious tribe near the Gurezgah hills, and inflicted
some loss on them, whereupon they sued for and obtained forgiveness.—[Diary ending 15th September.] A man from
Koorum said that Uslum had only dealt with the Moolla
Diary ending 22nd September. K hail > who were also in rebellion ; and had thence proceeded
to reduce the Bakur Khail. But the Ameer hastily summoned
him to Cabul, and directed him to send his force to Candahar, via Zoormut. The Ameer often stated, the agent wrote
hat he could not spend his time happily without Uslum, as was he was his best adviser.— [Diary ending 12th beptember.j
