the Cabul troops against Herat order me to accompany them, you should make such arranrret

sent in my place to command the army, as I cannot agree well with them in any way and a
stay of one day is equal to one year’s sojourn for me.”
690. Before their withdrawal, Uslum and Eeramoz had written, invitino-
Khan Agha, Jumsheedee, to come and help them, but he had excused himself
saying he had withdrawn from all world, affairs. The letter was sent only in
original, to the Ameer who (recalling no doubt all he had done to win this chief
from Yacoob) was much displeased.
691. The courtiers at Cabul were divided in opinion as to whether Yacoob
would or would not really come to Cabul, and the Ameer clearly thought be
would not; for the following extract from the diary of the 22nd June shows that
be never relaxed the preparations for bis march on Herat;
_ “ The Ameer has proposed to come out himself from Cabul on the 28th June, and after
halting at Deh Mozung, to proceed onwards on the 29th idem. In two days, i. <?., yesterday
and to-day, one hundred and forty cameldoads of magazine stores have been sent from the
Bala Hissar to Deh Mozung, but carriage for the troops who will accompany His Highness
has not been completed as yet.”
692. On the 23rd he got a letter dated the 12th, from Uslum and Feramoz
saying that Yacoob had undoubtedly started for Cabul on the 9th. And on the
24th the men who had been repairing the Huzara Eoad came back with the
startling news (brought by some of Yacoob’s sowars) that Uslum had invited
Feramoz to dinner and killed him; that Yacoob’s adherents at Herat had written
to tell him of this deed and to warn him not to go on to Cabul, as no one could
tell what might be going on there ; that, consequently, Yacoob had sent men to bring
him a safe conduct in the Ameer’s own hand-writing. As soon as the men came in,
the Ameer at once sent off Meer Akhor to re-assure the prince, but quite discredited
the story that Uslum had murdered the Commander-in-Chief. So he still did the
next day, when two horsemen from the

Khan, the Commander-in-Chief, and some other persons, were occupied in playing tuhlita-
(backgammon), when suddenly [itafaqun —accidentally) some person fired a gun from
outside the tent, and the Commander-in-Chicf having been shot on the back by this gun died
after a few minutes. As soon as the army received this information they collected

Alum Khan placed a Koran before them and assured them that Mahomed Uslum Khan was
quite innocent; that even if he had killed the Commander-inrChief, he was amenable to
Gpvernment only, and that they should not interfere with him. It was finally decided that

reported to the Ameer, and steps would be taken according to His Highnesses instructions.
“After hearing this report the Ameer at once sent General Daood Shah and Ball Mahomed
Khan, Peskkidmut, to the Cabul troops, and wrote to their officers that General Daood Shah
