ei Between Tashkund and Samarkand there are one hundred and twenty pieces of rifled
cannon, with a range of from three to six ftos.
“ One-half of the Russian army consists of cavalry, called Atligh Kuzak, armed with the
Jazail. This fire-arm is half a yard long, and has a muzzle spacious enough to admit the intro
duction of a man's hand. It is loaded with two balls, each of which contains several small
bullets. The Jazail is as effective as a cannon. The Jazaikhi horsemen wear a skin cap; the
dress otherwise resembles the English.
“The remaining half of the army consists of regular infantry (called Saldat), 20,(K>0
strong, armed with rifles, which have a range of 1,000' paces. This infantry is distributed

“A proclamation has been issued declaring all Russian laws to be in force in Samarkand.
“ Of two classes of the people inhabiting these territories^ viz., the Jews and the Sheeas
of Persia, the life and property is bound up with the Russian Government. These two people
have, from the commencement, been the true and staunch friends of the Russians, and they
have been the cause of the ruin of the others. The remaining portion of the people submit
to the power of Russia from necessity,
“ For some time provisions are being stored in Kutta-Kurghan, on the Bokhara and
Russian boundary."
748. A correspondent from Bokhara, whose letter is transcribed in the
diary for 17th July, wrote that the Ameer was still at Shuhr-i-Subz; that
General Von Kaufmann had gone back to Tashkund, vid Kitab, and that
Bokhara was profoundly tranquil.
II.—Mercantile News.
749. 2nd March 1869.—That the Russians had imposed a duty of 25 per
cent, on goods from Hindoostan; 20 per cent, on tea.
750. '1th June .'—Among many items of palpable untrue information, sent,
by a correspondent in Tashkoorghan, were the following fc which were possibly
true:
A kett of tea, whatever that might be, was taxed four annas.
One piece of mulmul, four Cabulee Rupees Indian silver coin also widely used in the Persian Gulf. (equal to 2-8 Company’s Rupees Indian silver coin also widely used in the Persian Gulf. .)
The trade in Indian goods had, it was said, been stopped by the Russians^
so that they were scarcely procurable. 751
751. June 2&th .—The schedule of rates recently introduced had been can
celled, and merchandize had only to pay the old dues, 2J per cent, on the value.
