Enclosure No- 3.
No. 85, dated Gulaliek, the 10th July 1871.
From—C. Alison, Esq., c. b., Her Britannic Majesty’s Minister at Teheran.
To—-The Right Hon’ble the Earl of Granville, k. g., &c., &c., &c.
I have the honor to annex translation of a report* received from the
x June 24 newswriter at Meshed, stating that Yacoob Khan
had proceeded to Cabnl to endeavour to effect a
reconciliation with his father, the Ameer Shere Ali Khan.
Translation of a letter from the Meshed Agent, to Mr. Alison, —dated ^ith June \§1\, received
tyth July 1871.
Two days ago a servant of mine arrived from Herat. According to his
report, General Eeramorz had reached Hurrah with twelve thousand horse and
foot and five guns. Mahomed Yacoob Khan had sent the Chief of the Jem-
sheedees with Jemsheedee and Hazareh horse to Sebzwar, which place he
besieged during twelve days, when General Eeramorz came to its rescue. He gave
Shere Ali Khan’s letters to that Chief to forward to Yacoob Khan, telling him
that if after their perusal Yacoob Khan should still wish to fight, he would
not object to it. The Chief sent the letters to Yacoob Khan. _ Their substance
was as follows: That it had become incumbent upon Shere Ali Khan to march
troops to Herat and revenge himself for the unsuitable proceedings of Yacoob
Khan, and for the murder of Hath Mahomed Khan. Yacoob Khan was aware
that if his father took no notice of such acts, and made over.Herat to him, the
whole of Afghanistan would revolt, probably slip out of his hands, and ver-
likely one of them would be killed, as happened m the case of Mahomed
Ameen Khan, and Mahomed Ali Khan, when both his brother and his son lost
their lives A great scandal would thus attach itself to Afghanistan, "he
best course therefore would be for Yacoob Khan, after having read these letters,
to hasten to his father so that evil tongues might be stopped, .^d these com:
nlications removed. Yacoob Khan thereupon held a council with his
