The Meer of Maimeena had sent a letter to Naib Mahomed Alum
Khan, Governor of Toorkistan, to the effect that Dilawar Khan, son of Meer
Hookoomut Khan,* and the eldest son of Khan Aka
* Late Meer of Maimeena. Jhuinshedee (in Herat territory), had come with
some mounted raiders within about 20 koss of Maimeena to commit depreda
tions, but were encountered by his officers and some troops and repulsed. Also
that about two or three hundred men of the enemy had been wounded and
taken prisoners. The Naib has sent this letter to the Ameer.
The Naib Mahomed Alum Khan has written to the Ameer that Ahmed
Yooz Bashee (centurion), who took His Highness’ Murasilla from Toorkistan
to the Russian authorities, has sent a
sowar

the Yooz Bashee has been detained by the Russians at Samarcund and His
Highness’ Murasilla has been forwarded to Tashkend, and that the Yooz
Bashee and his three sowars receive an allowance of 20 tungas a day for their
expenses.
From the letters which the Ameer has lately received from the Cabul
troops, it appears that the army will arrive at Candabar to-morrow or the
day after, and will halt there for ten days. Many of the people of Candahar
are much annoved with the tyranny of General

Translation of letter, dated 1 Uh October 1871, from the Agent at Cabul.
After the despatch of the Cabul Diary for the half w r eek ending the 12th
instant, a trusted agent from the Minister of tbe King of Bokhara waited on
the Ameer with a Murasilla from His Majesty the King of Bokhara, with a
view to joining Khowaja Abbass, Bokhara envoy, who has left for India with
the Turkish envoy, and Eshan Abool Hai, another Bokhara agent. A copy
of the Murasilla is enclosed, and the Ameer desires that the above envoys may
be detained in the British territory at the place at which they may have reached
until the Minister’s agent joins them. His Highness further wishes that the
Commissioner and Superintendent of the Peshawur Division will kindly, on re
ceipt of this letter, telegraph this news to the envoys, in order that they may
not proceed onwards. At present it has been proposed that this man should
start via Jellalabad.
