With reference to my letter and accompaniments, dated tlie 14th
instant, rso. 3738, I am directed to forward, for submission to the Govern
ment of India, the annexed copy of a letter from the Political Besident
in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , No. 730—180 of the 15th ultimo (with enclosure
from the senior naval officer in the Gulf), showing the manner in which
he purposes giving effect to the wishes of the Government of India, with
regard to watching the Arab coast during the progress of the Turkish
expedition against Nejd.

noted, and referring also to my confidential letter No. 695—172 of 3rd July
1871, and to its enclosure No. 674 of 3rd idem, I have now T the honor to
append a copy of a letter which I have received from the senior naval officer
in the Gulf, showing the manner in which he purposes giving effect to the
wishes of the Government of India in view to the watching of the Arab coast
and maintenance of communications during the period of the Turkish
expedition.
As submitted in paragraphs 8 to 12, inclusive, of my letter now noted,
I had personally conferred with the senior naval
officer on this subject, and had shown him my
[etter No. 626—159 of 15th June 1871, to your address wherein the arrange-
cnents I proposed for watching were detailed.

3 It is agreeable to me to find that the views of the senior naval officer
entirely coincide with my own, and that these are conformable with the gene-
ral instructions of the Government of India.
