In connection with, our separate despatch of this day’s
date, A o. 21.4!, forwarding further correspondence relative to the affairs of Muscat
and the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , we have the honor to transmit, for the information of
Her Majesty s Government, a copy of the papers noted in the accompanying
Abstract ot Contents, regarding the Mekran dependencies of Muscat and the
moyements of Syud Abdool Azeez.
2. The Bombay Government have expressed an opinion that it would be
of great advantage if Syud Toorkee were placed in the same position as regards
both Mekran and Bunder Abbass as bis predecessor; that his power should he
consolidated; and that the whole matter might he settled if the Gun-boat
Hugh Rose were sent to Gwadur and an intimation made to Ahdool Azeez that
we recognised Gwadur as the possession of the Sultan of Muscat.
3. We have informed the Bombay Government that the British Govern
ment are in no way called upon to interfere with a view to establish Syud
Toorkee’s rule in Gwadur and Charbar, hut that there is no prohibition against
Syud Toorkee putting to sea to establish his authority in any part of his
dominions outside the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. .

Letter and Enclosures to HM Secretary of State for India, dated 20 December 1871, concerning the Mekran [Makran] dependencies of Muscat: Gwadur [Gwadar] and Charbar [Chābahār].

The papers cover: the view of the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. that the Sultan of Muscat, Syud Toorkee [Sayyid Turkī bin Sa‘īd Āl Bū Sa‘īd] should enjoy the same rights over both Mekran and Bunder Abbas [Bandar Abbas] as his predecessor; the occupation of Gwadur and Charbar by the Sultan of Muscat's brother, Abdool Azeez [Abd'al Aziz Al-Said], and the Sultan's request that Abdool Azeez be removed from there by the British Government; the proposal that the gunboat Hugh Rose should be sent to the area to establish the Sultan's authority there; and the Government of India's view that while not preventing the Sultan of Muscat from sending ships and men to Gwadar and Charbar, the British Government ought not to interfere further in the matter.
