1866.
PREFACE.
In the preface to the Catalogue of the Library of the Society, prepared
and published in 1862, it was stated a General Index to the Contents
of the first Fifteen Volumes of the Society’s Transactions, combined
with a Catalogue of its Maps and Charts, would be presented in due
course.
Owing to circumstances inseparable from a prolonged residence in
India, part of this promise only was fulfilled by the completion of the
MS. Catalogue of Maps and Charts.
The want of an Index to the Society’s Transactions had long been
felt,—the more so from the circumstance that the majority of the
earlier volumes contained each little more than a table of contents,
such as would afford but little assistance for the purpose of reference.
A copious Index, however, was given with each volume from 1858,
while advarftage was taken of spare moments to prepare for the General
Index.
In March 1865 the Society thankfully accepted the very liberal offer
of Bhugwandass Purshotumdass, Esq., Justice of the Peace, Bombay,
and a member of the Society, to prepare and publish, at his expense,
the volume now issued.
Mr Balvant Crishnarao Palekar, the assiduous and intelligent clerk
to the Society, assisted me in the compilation of the Catalogues, while
the professional aid of a gentleman in Edinburgh was availed of to
complete the volume.
D. J. Kennelly.
