DIRECTIONS FOR CONSULTING THE INDEX.
An asterisk (*) prefixed to certain articles and figures—(thus, *Aden, the Gulf of,
xvi. 31)—indicates that the references are to the Society’s Pi'oceedings, which
are to be found at the beginning of each volume, separately paged in Roman
numerals.
Volumes II. and IV. of the Transactions having, the one four and the other two
separate pagings, references to the second series of each volume are marked
with an asterisk, (thus, ii. 64*;) to the third, with an obelisk, (thus, ii. 5f;)
and to the fourth, with a double dagger, (thus, ii. 27t.)
The great bulk of the information contained in the Transactions being of a geo
graphical nature, it will chiefly be found under the name of the country,
people, river, mountain, district, or town regarding which information may
be sought.
In order to facilitate reference for scientific and other purposes, the leading fea
tures of the various countries, districts, and towns described in the Transac
tions have been classified under the following heads:— Commerce, Ethno
graphy, Geology, Languages, Meteorology, NatuRxYl History, Philology,
Religion ; while, still further to assist this, on the following page will be found
a Synoptical View of all the information of a more strictly scientific and
generallv interesting nature contained in the Transactions, with the page of
the Index on which it occurs.
In addition to the ordinary arrangement under the names of places, &c., the great
mass of the more important papers will be found grouped under the follow
ing heads :— Memoirs, Memorandums, Narratives, Notes, Observations,
Remarks, Reports, Surveys.
