of the rue lateme, being found occasionally in the dry climate of
the interior, in localities exposed to the action of running water. 6 th
Ihe circumstance of laterite presenting distinctive peculiarities accord-*
mg to the nature of the subjacent rock with which it is in contact, and
from winch it has apparently been formed.
But even if it should appear that these facts do not warrant the
adoption of toe hypothesis of the laterite being formed by the action
ox causes still m operation, they seem at least adequate to establish the
toeory of the laterite being the result of changes effected in other
rocks in-sttu, without reference to the period when the transformation
occurred, and to be quite irreconcilable with the supposition of its beino-
a sedimentary or an igneous rock. “ °
