Mahabuleshwar, the storm appears to have been nearly from the same
direction as at Poona.
At every point around the vortex^ from whence information lias
been procured, we find the winds conforming 1 to the progressive cir
cle. The Swithamley, in Latitude 14° 39 7 N., Longitude 71° 52" E.,
had them blowing at N. EP. to West, and a heavy N,E. sea.
The Sesostris, in Latitude 13° 2S 7 1ST., Longitude 73° 14 7 E,, had
West and S.S. W. winds, with a heavy confused swell from N. W., pass
ing squalls, and the vessel rolling heavily. The Buckinghamshire, Faize
Bubahny, Mermaid, and other vessels on the coast to the southward or
in the wake of the vortex, all agree in recording N. W., West, and S.W.,
winds as far as Ceylon, and in Lat. 7° 50 7 N., and Long. 58° E.—J
have failed in obtaining any information regarding the winds and wea
ther in Guzerat and Scinde, except at Deesa, where they were N.E. to
S.E., and moderate. At Bombay, the storm was East, N.E., and
N.N.E.—of a force of five pounds.
From this date we have no means whatever of tracing the central
tract of the storm with any degree of certainty. That it passed near
Bombay to the eastward or westward, is all that we know. One account
(in the Bombay Times) says that it came “ first from South-east, a most
unusual quarter, and then settling down to South-west, as during the
best established periods of the monsoon.” This would lead us to infer
that its vortex passed to the westward of the harbour ; and almost
all other accounts, as far as they go, tend to confirm this opinion. On
the other hand, the observations made every two hours at the Colaba
Observatory, describe the wind as having veered from N.E. by N. to
N.W. and W.N.W. By this, and we must place reliance on it, it is
evident that the central part of the storm was to the eastward of the
Observatory, uut as the force of the wind does not seem to have been
at all equal to that previously experienced near the focus, it is proba-
. latter passed at a considerable distance from Bombay. Wero
it not foi the indication of a severe storm having successively passed
ovei Suiat, Ahmedabad, Deesa, Kurrachee, and Shikarpoor, within a
few days after, we lose all direct traces of the Malabar Hurricane, and
ght conclude that it had either lost its extreme violence, steady
me of progiession, and specific rotation, soon after approximating
the coast at Rutnagherry, or altogether broke up.
