any Profits in Trade are equivalent to a

It is alledged, the India Ships are built on
an expensive Eftablifhment, contrary to
Oeconomy. The Objedl of The Company
has ever been, to get gcod^ rather than cheap
Ships; and, I believe, both Reafon and
Experience will fully confirm this principle :
however, the nature of the Ships being
directed by The Company, and not by The
Owners; This is a matter which cannot
have any real influence on the prefent
queflion.
It may with equal propriety be alledged,
that all the decorations, carvings; &c. of Men
of War, are ufelefs expence, and that the Guns
might be fought as well, if the Ship had
neither Head nor Quarter Galleries. I deny
the inference; if extended to a general rule;
for the pride of'an Engli/Jj Sailor, is in the
appearance of his Ship, and if you deprive
him
