This item consists of copies of correspondence, minutes, and consultations cited in, or enclosed with, political letters from the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. . These political letters appear in IOR/F/4/2416/130506. It is the seventh in a series of twenty-eight items on the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. .
The correspondents are: the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. ; Lieutenant-Colonel Samuel Hennell, Resident in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. ; and Sheik Saeed ben Guzeeb [Sa‘īd bin Qāzib], Governor of Lingah [Bandar-e Lengeh].
The item concerns:
- Hennell’s instructions for HC Sloop Clive to be stationed at the lower end of the Gulf, in response to the ‘disturbed state of affairs on the coast of Batinah [Al Batinah]’
- A letter from Sheik Saeed ben Guzeeb accusing Ahmed ben Houssein [Aḥmad bin Ḥusayn], the Agent at Lingah, of receiving a bribe from the owner of two enslaved people.
