With reference to War Office letterWTo. 0152/5635 (M.I.
2) on the subject of the repatriation of Mesopotamian
officers from Syria, I am directed by Earl Curzon of Kedleston
to transmit herewith, to be laid before Mr. Secretary
Montagu, copy of this Department’s reply thereto, from
which it will be observed that His Lordship considers that
the early return of these officers to Mesopotamia is
desirable, but that he strongly deprecates the intervention
of any representation of the Emir Eeisal on the grounds that
such a, course would be liable to be interpreted as pre-'
judging the future of Mesopotamia.
2. It is understood from your letter Ho.6756 of the
26th ultimo that Mr. Montagu is in favour of the early
repatriation of these officers, as suggested by Sir P.Cox,
and I am, theretore, to request that concurrence in the
proposals,

In particular, it is concerned with: the number of the expelled officers; the number of those threatened with expulsion; the reasons for their expulsion; the total costs incurred or proposed to be incurred; discussion of whether the French authorities will share in the expense of the repatriation; and discussion of whether the British Government will pay for the return from the military, imperial or Mesopotamia funds.
