My dear Hardinge.
The matter of repatriation of Mesopotamian officers,
dealt with in Foreign Office despatch Ho.3149 (3 11476/9417/44)
of September 21, seems to me to require very careful handling
in making a communication to the French Government, and I should
therefore he grateful if you could give me a little more informa
tion before I take action as instructed. In the first place,
what is the nationality of the Mesopotamian officers and to what
army do they belong (perhaps Faisal*s)? Secondly I presume
their exp^sion from Syria must have been ordered by the French
themselves on account of some alleged anti-French activities.
Thirdly, to what place or country have they been or are they
going to be sent by the French, and by what route is it proposed
to repatriate them to Mesopotamia? If the French consider
these officers* activities to be injurious to French interests
in Syria, they might possibly require some guarantees to ensure
that the officers »if repatriated to Mesopotamia, will be
effectively prevented from renewing their anti-French schemes*
The French are naturally most sensitive about things of this
kind, and so you will understand that I should like to be very
sure of my ground before approaching them either verbally or in
writing on the subject.
