In acknowledging the receipt of your letters marginally noted, I am directed
No. 5922 , dated itth October 1872 . to forward herewith two copies of the Treaty
„ 6895, „ 25th November „ concluded with the Foodhlee Chief duty rati
fied by His Excellency the Viceroy and Governor-General, one copy to be
delivered to the Eoodhlee Chief, and the other to be recorded in the Office of the
Resident at Aden.
2. With regard to the Officiating Resident’s proposal that the Eoodhlee
Chief should he presented with a couple of guns, I am to state that His Excel
lency the Viceroy and Governor-General in Council is unable to sanction the
measure, but the Officiating Resident may be authorized to purchase and present
the Chief with half a dozen sporting rifies, if he thinks the refusal of the guns
will thereby be softened.
3. In the latter of your letters now under acknowledgment, it is stated
that the Yaffaee Chief has refused to abide by the agreement in regard to the
water supply from the River Nazaa, which his son made on his behalf
with the Eoodhlee Chief in May last. With reference to this matter, I am to
intimate that His Excellency the Viceroy and Governor-General in Council
approves of General Schneider’s proceedings as reported in his letter No. 246-897,
dated 12th November 1872. If possible, however, he should endeavour to
avert hostilities and persuade the Chiefs to settle their differences amicably.
4. In the event of hostilities between the Chiefs, the Resident should
guard against interference on the part of the Turkish authorities with either
party. The slightest indication of such an attempt should be at once reported
to Government by telegraph.
