Adverting to your letter No. 1720P., dated the 7 th. August last, lam
directed to enclose copy of a letter from the Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. at Aden, No.
187-702 of the 12th ultimo, forwarding for certification by the Government of
India three copies of the engagement (duly signed), negotiated by Major-General
Tremenheere with the Poodhlee Chief on the 6th May 1872, for buying up his
right to levy transit dues by the payment to him of a monthly sum of 80 Dollars,
in addition to his present stipend.
2. I am at the same time to submit, for the orders of His Excellency the
Viceroy and Governor-General in Council, the Political Resident’s request for a
couple of guns on behalf of the Eoodhlee Chief.

In compliance with the instructions conveyed in Government Resolution
No. 4822, dated 16th August 1872, I have the honor to forward herewith two
copies of the engagement entered into with the Eoodhlee Chief on the 6th May
last, duly signed, together with a third copy, to he returned on certification for
record in this Office.
2. I take this opportunity of informing Government that on his late visit
to Aden, Sultan Husain, the brother of the Eoodhlee Chief, reiterated the request
for a couple of guns, which he had made nearly two years previously. On
that occasion Sir Edward Russell was strongly in favour of the request being
acceded to, but the Government of India, on general grounds of expediency, de
clined to entertain the proposal. Since that period the behaviour of the Eoodhlee
tribe has been most satisfactory, and the good-will which the Chief bears towards
the British Government has been evinced in numerous instances, the most
recent of which has been the readiness with which he met the views of my
predecessor in visiting Aden and concluding the engagement for the abolition
of transit dues throughout his territory now submitted for ratification. Our
relations with the most powerful tribe in this vicinity being on this friendly
footing, I am of opinion that the presentation of such a token of the regard of
Government as is now recommended would have a most beneficial effect, and
in strengthening the hands of a warlike, though no longer aggressive, neighbour,
would tend to preserve the general peace of the country, and remove the
humiliation the Chief and his brother endure in the remembrance of the loss
of their guns in the year 1867, through the obduracy of their father, when it
became nesessary to undertake military operations against their country.

For the furtherance of peace and amity between the high British Government and the tribe of the
Foodhlees, the undersigned, Major-General Charles William Tremenheere, C.B.,
Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. at Aden, on behalf of the British Government, and Sultan Haidara
bin Ahmud bin Abdullah, the Foodhlee,^/ himself and his successors, have agreed to
the following conditions.
Article I.
Sultan Haidara bin Ahmed bin Abdullah the Eoodhlee, agrees to waive
ns claim to transit dues and to all rights of revenue accruing from the kafilas
which enter and which leave Aden, and that the road through his territory
s lall be entirely free, and that there shall be no obstacles in the way of travellers
upon it. y
